Revitalizing Your Driveway: A Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide

By B&H Clean Team ·

A long concrete driveway after a professional pressure wash

Your driveway is one of the first things people notice about your home. Over time, weather, vehicle traffic and debris leave it discolored, stained and streaked with mildew. Regular cleaning improves the look and helps the concrete last longer.

Here is how to do it right.

Step 1: Gather your supplies

  • A pressure washer (or a garden hose with a high-pressure nozzle)
  • A concrete-safe degreaser or detergent
  • A stiff-bristle brush or push broom
  • Gloves, eye protection and non-slip shoes
  • Sealant, if you want longer-lasting protection

Step 2: Clear and prepare the area

Move vehicles and anything else off the driveway. Sweep away loose dirt, leaves and debris so the water can do its job.

Step 3: Pre-treat stubborn stains

Oil stains: apply a degreaser, let it sit 10 to 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush to break the oil loose.

Mildew and algae: use a mildew remover made for concrete, let it soak, then rinse. Always follow the label and keep chemicals away from plants and pets.

Step 4: Wash the driveway

  • Start at the highest point and work down so dirty water doesn’t run over clean concrete.
  • Use a wide-angle tip (25° or 40°) and keep a steady distance from the surface.
  • Work in consistent, overlapping passes. Uneven passes are what cause “zebra stripes.”

This is where professional equipment makes the biggest difference. We use commercial surface cleaners that spin two nozzles under a hood, which leaves an even finish with no stripes.

Step 5: Seal it (optional)

Once the driveway is completely dry, a penetrating sealer adds a layer of defense against moisture, oil and UV damage.

Step 6: Keep it clean

  • Sweep weekly.
  • Rinse monthly to keep dirt from building up.
  • Schedule a professional wash at least once a year.
